The design of “Mei Mei Lou” had as its goal to create a new landmark in Los Angeles’s Chinatown. First, the black and white brick patterning works as a bold optical effect, with the bricks appearing to move and shift when stared at. The colors also work towards iconicity: the pink used is “millennial pink”, instantly recognizable and eminently instagrammable. The yellow and blue serve as further pops of color to engage and draw the eye. The result is a visual feast, captivating and memorable. The various patterning both gestures to timelessness, as well as making the project extremely of the moment.
